1. Typing Letter Like Symbols in Windows
In Windows applications, you can use one of the below methods.
1.1. Using Decimal Code with Alt Key
- Hold one of the alt keys and type the decimal code.
- Make sure to use the number pad on your keyboard for typing the code.
- Release the alt key.
- The code will be converted to corresponding letter like symbol.
For example, Alt + 8485 will make Ounce sign like ℥.
1.2. Hex Code with Alt + X in Word
- Open a Word document and type the hex code for a letter like symbol.
- Press alt and x keys together.
- The hex code will be converted to corresponding symbol.
For example, 211E Alt + X will make Prescription Take symbol like ℞.
1.3. Using Symbol Utility in Office Apps
All Office apps comes with in-built Symbol utility which you can use for typing letter like symbols like Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Open Word or any other Office app.
- Go to “Insert” menu, click the “Symbol” button and select “More Symbols…” option.
- In “Symbol” utility, select “Letterlike Symbols” from “Subset” dropdown.

1.4. Use Character Map to Insert Letter Like Symbols
Windows also come with a Character Map app similar to Symbol utility in Office apps. The difference is that you can copy the symbol to clipboard in Character Map and insert in any application.
- Search and open Character Map using default Windows Search box.
- Make sure the “Advanced view” option is checked.
- Select “Unicode” as “Character set” and “Unicode Subrange” as “Group by” options.
- Select “Letterlike Symbols” option in “Group by” pop-up.

2. Typing Letter Like Symbols in Mac
On Mac, you can either use option/alt key or Character Viewer app.
2.1. Using Option Key
- Change the input method to Unicode Hex Input using the input menu icon on top bar.
- Hold one of the option keys and type the hex code of a letter like symbol.
- Release the option key and the code will be converted to corresponding symbol.
For example, Option + 2105 will make Care Of symbol like ℅.
2.2. Using Character Viewer
- Open any app in which you want to insert a symbol.
- Go to “Edit > Emoji & Symbols” menu to open Character Viewer app.
- Click the symbol icon showing on top right corner to enlarge the app.
- Now, click the customize icon and select “Customize List…” option from the list.
- Check “Letterlike Symbols” and “Letterlike Symbols – All” option under “Symbols” category and click “Done” button.
- Go to “Letterlike Symbols” or “Letterlike Symbols – All” category from the left sidebar.
- Find the symbol that you want to insert and double click on it.
