It is very common to use hands symbol on chat conversations for OK – π, thumbs up – π, etc. Unicode has two types of hands symbols – emoji and normal code points. 3. Typing Hands Symbols in Windows
There are multiple ways to insert these symbols in Windows computers.
3.1. Using Alt + Decimal Codes
As mentioned, use alt + decimal codes to insert hands symbol on Word, PowerPoint and Notepad. Hold one of the alt keys and then press the numbers one by one using numeric keypad on your keyboard.Β For example, hold Alt key and then type 9997 keys on the numeric pad will produce the writing hand symbol β. Remember, you need to have a separate numeric keypad for entering decimal numbers.
3.2. Alt + X Shortcuts for Hands Symbols for Microsoft Word
Type the hexadecimal code in the second column of the table then press alt and x keys.Β For example, type 270C keys and hold Alt and press X keys to produce victory hand symbol β.
3.3. Inserting Hand Emoji in Windows
Windows 10 and 11 has an emoji keyboard which you can access by pressing “Win + ;” keys on any application. Go to emoji section and type “hand” in the search box to filter all hand related symbols. These hand emoji symbols support skin tones which you can switch by selecting the dot showing above the emojis. There are six skin tones available – Default, Light, Medium Light, Medium, Medium Dark and Dark. After finding the symbol, change the skin tone and then insert it in your document.
4. Insert in Mac Documents
Similar to Windows, you have two ways to insert the symbols in macOS.
4.1. Using Option Code
On Mac documents like Pages and Keynote, you can insert the hands symbols using option + hexadecimal codes. However, you need to change the input method to Unicode Hex Input and this method will only work for the 4 digits hex codes. For example, Option + 261D will produce the white up pointing index symbol like β.
4.2. Using Character Viewer App
Mac has an emoji keyboard called Character Viewer. Press, “Control + Command + Space” to open emoji keyboard. Type hand in the search box and choose the hand symbol from the results. Mac also has six additional skin tones for the hand emojis which you can select when clicking on the applicable symbol.
5. Insert in HTML and Web Documents
- On HTML documents, you can use decimal escape strings in the format &# 128070; or hexadecimal escape strings in the format &#x 9756; (use the codes without spaces).
- If you want to use the hands symbols on CSS and JavaScript documents, use the hexadecimal codes in the format \1F4AA and \u1F4AA respectively. Below is an example of using CSS pseudo selector with list element to show handshake π€ emoji.

6. Inserting Hands Emojis on Facebook and Twitter
You can use the emoji picker from Facebook, Twitter and Skype to insert the hands symbols. However, these apps use their own encoding technology of the Unicode symbols. Hence, you will find the display is different on the apps compared to document or browser display.
7. Formatting Hands Symbols
Remember the symbols are also treated like text content. So, you can make them bold, italic and change the colors. By default most of the emoji hands symbols will be in yellow color. If the symbol is filled with the predefined color then you can’t change it. For those hands only with outline, you can change the color and size of the hand similar to any other text content.
