Apple iPhone offers one of the best cameras among all smartphones. You can easily capture professional level videos and pictures without any training. However, many users do not aware that you can trim videos in iPhone and apply simple effects. If that is not enough you have hundreds of free and premium apps available in App Store for editing your videos.
Trimming and Editing Videos
Whether you are recording a screen for a YouTube tutorial or taking a personal video, starting/ending parts of the video always contains unwanted portions. You can easily trim the start and end portion using the default video editor in iPhone. In addition, you can apply effects like cropping using the same editor. You can use these features to convert your videos into a professional looking piece in few minutes.
Using Default iPhone Video Editor for Trimming
- Launch Photos app and open your video.
- Tap on “Edit” link showing on top right corner to launch the video editor.
- Now you will see the slider at the bottom of the video along with a play button.
- You can see two arrows at the starting and ending. Hold and move these arrows to the required position to trim the edges.
- You can see the selected portion of the video is highlighted in yellow color.
- Tap on “Done” button and choose whether you want to save the video as the same file or as a new clip.
Other Video Editing Options
Other than trimming, you have the following options at the bottom in iPhone video editor.
selecting this will show plenty of additional icons and you can tap on “Auto” option to automatically adjust the color, contrast and brightness of the video. Otherwise, you can manually tap on each icon and use the slider to apply the adjustments.
Select Preset Filters
Tap on this to view presets to change the ambience of the video. You can apply the filters like mono color, cool, warmth, dramatic, etc. to apply that effect.
Crop, Flip, Rotate and Change Aspect Ratio
Tap on this icon and then drag the corners of the video to crop its size. You can also change the horizontal and vertical perspectives and rotate the entire video to a specific angle.
The top left portion will show two additional options for flipping horizontally and rotating in 90 degrees. There is change aspect ratio button on top right corner, which will allow you to change the aspect ratio to freeform, square, 9:16, 4:5, 5:7, 3:4, 3:5 and 2:3. You can anytime tap on the “Reset” link showing on top center to revert all your changes.
Using Videoleap – Third-Party Video Editor App
The default video editor in iPhone is sufficient for trimming and applying simple effects. However, there are some basic options missing in the editor like undo each step – you can cancel everything but not each step. If you want all these additional functions, then install Videoleap app from the App Store. The free version of this app offers most of the missing functions and allows you to add two layers over your video. If you want to add more than two layers then you need to go for the premium version. Here are some of the notable features of Videoleap app:

After installing the app, tap on + icon to select your video and start editing. Similar to iPhone’s default editor, you can find various options at the bottom section. Tap on the icons and start adding text, stickers, audio and apply filters as you need.
If you are using more than two overlays, the app will show that you are using premium feature. You can simply hold and move the overlay that you do not want to the trash. When your video is ready, tap on “Export” button and select the resolution and frames per seconds. You can even save the video as 4K with 60 FPS. Tap on the “Save” icon to save your video to Photos or directly send to Messages.
If you want to share on other apps like WhatsApp, then tap on “More” option to open the default iPhone sharing section. The app will prepare your video and show the name and size, you can choose the app and share with your friends instantly.
