How to Play Background Sound on iPhone for Better Sleep?

Insomnia or sleeplessness is one of the biggest problems for those using digital devices a lot. Listening to a mild music is the best solution to deal with sleeping problems. There are hundreds of free and premium apps available in iPhone App Store for managing your sleep timing. Even iPhone has a Screen Time, Health and Fitness apps for keeping body and mind in shape. However, listening to mild background sound during your bedtime can easily help to have a good sleep.

Playing Background Sound in iPhone

There are two methods to play a background sound and you do not need any third-party for this.

1. From Accessibility Settings

  • Scroll down to “Hearing” section and tap on “Audio/Visual” option.

  • Tap on “Background Sounds” option which is set to “Off” by default. As you can see in the description, it can help to focus on work or taking rest.

  • On the next screen, tap the switch against “Background Sounds” and enable that option.
  • Tap on “Sound” option and choose “Rain” or any other option from the list.

  • iPhone will download the high-quality music which you can play as your background sound.

Deleting and Downloading Sounds

Other than rain, you have few more background sound options like ocean, stream, balanced noise, bright noise and dark noise. You can tap on any of these options and download the music to your iPhone. If you do not like the these sounds for any reason, tap on “Edit”. You will see the size of each sound in the list.

Tap on the – icon and then select “Delete” option to remove the high-quality sounds from your iPhone. However, the sample music will still be there on your phone and anytime you can redownload the high-quality music by tapping on the option again.

Other Background Sound Options

After selecting the background sound, you can set the volume and allow the background to play along with other media. Perhaps you should disable “Use When Media is Playing” option if you are focusing on sleeping. Otherwise, tap on “Play Sample” to listen and adjust the volumes accordingly.

If you want the background sound to play entire night, then disable “Stop Sounds When Locked” option. Otherwise, you can enable this option to disable background sound when the iPhone is locked. Then go to “Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock” section and set the timer as 5 minutes. In this manner, you can listen to the background sound as well as get the light for 5 minutes from your iPhone screen.

2. From Control Center

The latest iOS version allows you to play the background music directly from the Control Center instead of going through accessibility settings.

  • Swipe from top right-corner of the screen to open Control Center in iPhone.
  • Tap on the “Hearing” icon which should be available by default (the icon will look like an ear).

  • This will show a list of options like Speaker, Background Sounds and Live Listen. Tap on “Background Sounds” option.

  • Select the item you want to play, set the volume and tap on the “Background Sounds” icon (looks like three music tones) to start playing.
  • Anytime, tap on the hearing icon and then the music icon to stop playing the sound.

Instead of two times tapping (first hearing and then the background sound) on the icons, you can simply the steps by directly adding the “Background Sounds” icon to your Control Center (you can also add the “Hearing” icon in similar way if it is not shown by default).

  • Open Control Center and long press on the empty area.
  • Tap on “Add a Control” link that appears on the bottom.

  • Scroll down to “Hearing Accessibility” section. Find “Background Sounds” icon and tap on it. Alternatively, use the search box to find and the icon.

  • This will add the icon to your Control Center and tap on the empty area to close the editing.
  • Now, tap on the icon and your iPhone will start playing the background sound. Again tap on it to stop the sound.

  • If you want to change the sound, long press on the icon and select your music and set the volume.

Final Words

You can also use this background sound for pranking your friends by playing a background rain sound on iPhone when it is locked. You can use rain, stream or ocean sounds in the bedtime for focusing on your sleep without disturbing mind. Unfortunately, there are no options at this point to upload your own music and listen to it as a background sound.
