By default, your iPhone should use the ringtone sound whenever there is an incoming call. However, sometimes you will not hear the volume or sound when receiving incoming calls. Here are some of the simple things you can check to fix the issue.
Ringer Sound in iPhone
You can set the ringer sound in iPhone by going to “Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone”. Some of the tones will have very low volumes, so make sure you have an audible tone which you can hear clearly. For the vibration, tap on “Vibration” option and make sure you have not set “None” option.
Note: On older phones and iOS versions, you will find “Sounds” section instead of “Sounds & Haptics”.
1. Check Ring / Silent Switch
All iPhone models come with a small switch just above the volume up button on the left side of the phone. This switch is called Ring/Silent switch which you can use to toggle ring and silent mode. When the switch is in ring mode, you can hear the sound from phone speaker. If you have mistakenly moved the switch to silent mode, you will not hear any sound from phone’s speaker including ringtone for the incoming calls. If the silent mode is on, the switch will show orange color. Check whether you can see orange color just above the volume up button and move it to up to change to ring mode.
Here is how the switch will look with ring and silent mode as per Apple’s support document.
Note that by default, iPhone will vibrate when you switch on silent mode. However, you can enable or disable vibration in silent mode by going to “Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Vibrate on Silent”.
2. Increase Your Volume
Next thing is to check if you have mistakenly reduced the ringer volume to very low level. You can increase the ringer volume to check if you can hear the incoming call’s sound. There are two possibilities to control the ringer volume in iPhone – one is using volume up/down buttons on the left side of the phone and other is using the setting.
- Using volume up/down buttons – in this case simply press the volume up button and check if you could hear the ringer sound. You should see the ringer volume slider appears on top of the iPhone.
- Using fixed volume for ringer in setting – in this case, go to “Settings > Sounds & Haptics” section and check under “Ringer and Alerts” section. Simply, drag the slider to increase the volume. If you want to use volume buttons then enable “Change with Buttons” option.
In both cases, pressing the volume up/down buttons when receiving an incoming call will mute the ringer tone. So, make sure you are not pressing the volume buttons. In addition, the incoming calls will also ring on your Mac if the devices are nearby and connected with same Apple ID. Do not get confused with the Mac’s ringtone and iPhone ringtone.
3. Disable Paired Bluetooth Headphone or Speakers
The problem with smart devices is that they will automatically connect to previously connected devices. This is very useful for reconnecting to Wi-Fi networks as you do not need to enter the password every time. However, this can create problems when the iPhone automatically connects to your Bluetooth headphones. Your incoming call maybe ringing in the headphone and you will not notice it on the phone’s screen. In this case, go to “Settings > Bluetooth” section and check whether any headphone or speakers paired with the phone. Disable any paired devices, so that you can receive ringer sound from phone’s speakers.
4. Shutdown and Restart iPhone
This is similar to restarting your computer which will resolve most of the problems. You can shut down the iPhone by going to “Settings > General > Shut Down”. The shutdown option is available at the bottom the general settings page. After shutting the phone down, you can restart by pressing and holding the power button. Leave the button when you see the Apple logo appears on the screen indicating your phone is booting.
5. Reset iPhone
If the above solutions did not fix your ringer problem for incoming call, then the next option is to reset your iPhone. Remember, restarting and resetting are two completely different actions. Resetting will remove all your customizations, contacts, Wi-Fi password, etc. and setup your phone to initial factory settings. Therefore, make sure to take a backup of your iPhone so that you can restore after resetting. The easy way is to use iCloud by going to “Settings > Tap your Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Backup”. Then tap “Back Up Now” to take the current backup of your iPhone into iCloud.
You can reset by going to “Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone”. Select “Reset” and the “Reset All Settings” option when prompted and wait for the action to complete. When your iPhone boots with factory settings, you can check the ringer sound is working for incoming calls. If yes, you can restore the backup from iCloud backup and continue working with the phone.
Final Words
We hope one of the above solutions helped you to fix no ringer sound with incoming calls in your iPhone. In most cases, simply turning off the silent mode switch will do the trick. Otherwise, you may need to contact Apple support if your speakers are damaged.
