Chrome is the most popular browser on the world used by more than 60% of the people. The cross platform capabilities and security make chrome the robust browser on both Windows based computers and macOS based Macintosh. Google also developed the look and feel of the browser same on Windows and Mac thus improving the user experience across the platforms. If you are still using Firefox, Edge or Safari then it is high time to try Chrome.
Installing Chrome on Windows
Go to Google Chrome official website for downloading the latest version. Google will automatically redirect you to the Mac or Windows versions based on the computer you use.
Click on the download button to get the executable installation file having a name ‘ChromeSetup.exe’. Double click on the setup file start the Chrome app installation.
If you have logged as an administrator then allow the app to install on your computer. Generally, you need to have administrator access to install Chrome on your computer. If you have logged in as a normal user without admin access then you have two options. Enter the admin details otherwise when prompted or click no button to come out of the ‘User Account Control’ popup. Now Chrome will prompt you with an option for installing without admin access. Click ‘Yes’ to continue installing Chrome without admin access. This is useful for installing Chrome on company laptop on which you may not have admin access.
You can see the installation progress similar to installation of any other application.
Installing Chrome on Mac
The process remains same on Mac except that you will have a disk image file ‘googlechrome.dmg’ instead of executable installer file. Once downloaded, double click on the .dmg file to start the installation. Drag and drop the Google Chrome app to the Applications folder to complete the installation.
By default, Chrome will automatically update to the latest version when connected to the internet. You can also go to ‘chrome://settings/help’ URL in the address bar to get the updates.
If you have problem with Chrome for any reasons then uninstall and reinstall to check the problem can be resolved. On Mac, simply drag and drop the Chrome app to the Trash bin to delete the app.
Follow the below process on Windows:
- Search for ‘control panel’ and open Control Panel desktop app.
- Change the ‘View by’ option to ‘Category’ in Control Panel.
- Select ‘Uninstall a program’ option under ‘Programs’ category.
- Choose Google Chrome app and click on ‘Uninstall’.
· This will remove Chrome and all related files from your computer.
Chrome Developer and Canary Version
Google Chrome browser has many versions. You should always use the stable and secured version as explained above. However, if you are a developer or interested in knowing the experimental features in advance then you can try the developer or canary version.
Go to the Chrome developer or canary site and download the installation file.
You can install Chrome canary version in parallel to the stable version on the same computer. This is a good option that you can use both browsers for different purposes. The canary Chrome version will look like yellow dimmed icon compared to the bright stable Chrome version.
