Personalizing the web browser is one of the easiest ways to make your browsing experience unique and enjoyable. In our earlier article, we have explained how to use a plain color, an image or a video as the background of Microsoft Edge browser. The latest version offers an AI Theme Generator that lets you create unique browser themes simply by describing what you want in plain English. Instead of downloading pre-made themes, you can generate your own artwork in seconds using artificial intelligence.
Accessing Edge AI Theme Generator
If you have generated slides in PowerPoint with the Designer feature, Edge AI Theme Generator is something similar to that. In fact, AI Theme Generator uses the same Microsoft Designer with DALL·E 3, allowing you to transform text prompts into beautiful browser themes. At this point, The AI Theme Generator currently works only on the desktop version of Microsoft Edge and you should sign in to Edge with a personal Microsoft account to generate a custom theme.
- Open Microsoft Edge and go to edge://settings/appearance page.
- Scroll down on the right pane and find “Explore more themes” section.
- Click “AI Theme Generator” option to open it in a new tab.

Using a Theme from Templates
A list of sample templates are available on the bottom of AI Theme Generator page, which you can use without generating from scratch.
- Simply hover on a preview and click “Apply theme” button.
- Click “Apply” on the confirmation prompt.
- The theme will be applied instantly without the need of logging into your account.
Editing a Template Theme
If you like a template but want to modify further, hover on it and select “Modify prompt” option. This will copy the original prompt (used for generating that template) into the prompt box, which you can change as you need. As mentioned, you should sign in with your personal Microsoft account for generating a new theme.
Let’s take an example with the template prompt showing as “A dog helping a cat climb over a fence”. We modify the prompt as “A dog helping a cat climb over a fence in a beautiful meadow”.
Below is the theme generated by Edge AI Theme Generator for the new prompt. You can change the accent color (called browser frame color) and apply the theme or share it on social platforms. When sharing you will get a permanent URL and an option to download the generated image.
Creating a Theme from Scratch
For creating a new theme, type your prompt in the box and click “Create theme” button. Since the quality of the AI generate theme depends largely on the prompt you provide, make sure to clearly describe the main subject, style (like watercolor or pixel art), lighting, camera angle, and mood (like peaceful or cozy). The prompt box supports up to 512 characters, giving you plenty of room for detailed descriptions.
Here are some prompts that produce impressive browser themes:
- A futuristic Tokyo street at night filled with neon lights, cinematic, ultra realistic.
- Cozy cabin beside a frozen lake during snowfall, warm lighting.
- Colorful tropical parrots sitting in a rainforest, vibrant watercolor painting.
- Fantasy castle floating above clouds during sunrise.
- Underwater coral reef filled with glowing jellyfish, photorealistic.
- Steam-powered Victorian city, steampunk illustration.
Note: If you have no idea about entering a prompt, simply click on the “Surprise Me” button. This will generate a random prompt for you and allow you to generate a theme for that prompt.
Editing and Removing AI Generated Theme
- Go to edge://settings/appearance page.
- Under “Theme” section, click the “Image Theme” button.
- You can find the AI generated theme is showing in the list with “AI theme applied” notification.
- Select the desired color from the palette showing on the image preview or click the pencil icon and select a custom color. This will change the accent and the appearance of your theme.
- If you don’t want to use the AI theme, simply select any other image (or color) or click the “Restore default” link. This will only change the theme and will not remove completely from the list.
