Many publishers like us rely on advertising revenue for running the site and life. We use Google AdSense and there are many other Google partners sell ad inventory for publishers. Earlier days Google had a limitation on number of ads publishers can show on a page. However, this has been removed and Google introduced different types of ad formats in recent days. Users easily get annoyed with these advertisements and use ad blocker extensions in browser to block advertisements. In this article, we will explain why and how to disable ad blocker in Google Chrome browser.
Why to Disable Ad Blocker Extensions?
There are two primary reasons users block advertisements – one is to stop tracking to avoid showing personalized ads and other is to avoid distraction. Let us explain how ad blockers can’t help you in both cases.
Privacy Reasons
However, they forget the fact that ad blocker extensions need complete access to the sites you access in order to stop unnecessary ads. This essentially means installed ad blocker extensions can read the data like your login username and password. In fact, you should provide the necessary permissions after installing the extension before you start using.
- Launch Chrome and open any website’s login page.
- Click on the puzzle icon and then click on the three vertical dots against your ad blocker extension. In this article, we will explain with Adblock Plus and the process remains same for all other ad blocker extensions in Chrome.
- It will show you a list of menu items and click on “This Can Read and Change Site Data” option.
- You will generally see, “On All Sites” options is enabled indicting the extension can read the data you enter on the login or any other form on all the site you visit.
Remember, these extensions can track data from any sites you visit like banking, personal and forum sites. It will be fun that you do not believe Google for privacy reasons and offer all confidential details to an unknown ad blocker company. Therefore, using ad blockers have same privacy and tracking problems like tracking from the website cookies.
Removing Distraction
If your objective is to read content without distraction then Chrome offers reader mode option. If you are adamant in using ad blocker extensions, be aware that most of the ad blockers participate in Acceptable Ad programs. You can view the details from the extension’s option page.
This means the extension will allow nonintrusive ads even though you have enabled it in the browser. You can view websites like searchenginejournal.com and see all those advertisements will still be showing bypassing ad blocker extension. This is the same case with many other popular websites that ad blocker has no real way to block distractions.
Next, websites can have affiliate links, sponsored content, banner ads and pop-ups. Ad blockers will not block any of these stuffs which are actually annoying than visible advertisements shown using ad code script. Since, ad blockers block based on keywords in file names, source code and content, they can’t block inline affiliate or normal banner ads.
Websites Block Content with Ad Blockers
Besides privacy and distractions which are from user’s perspective, many websites block content when ad blocker is detected in the browser. Below is an example from Business Insider and you have no other option to disable ad blocker or subscribe to read the content.
Some websites may show an alert requesting you to unblock like below. Though you can continue without disabling ad blocker, it does not make sense as the site owner clearly mentioned the site depends on ad revenue.
In addition, some websites will not work which you need to access frequently. For example, if you are an AdSense publisher, Google AdSense account pages will show an irrelevant error. However, the problem is with ad blocker extension and you have no other option than disabling or removing ad blocker to use your AdSense account.

This is useful to disable on home pages of news websites which you normally grasp the headlines without clicking and viewing detailed pages. You can do this by turning off the switch against “This page” option and click “Refresh” button.
