Strikethrough Keyboard Shortcuts in Microsoft Office
Microsoft Office applications like Word and Excel offer full tracking and commenting features to track changes. However, strikethrough is one of the useful ways you can easily show the difference between previous and current document versions. The advantage of strikethrough is it is visually easy to understand that the previous content was modified and you can still see the modified content. If you use strikethrough frequently, here is the keyboard shortcuts for getting it quickly.
Strikethrough Shortcut in Word
The keyboard shortcut for strikethrough in Microsoft Word documents is Alt + H + 4. When you press one of the Alt keys, Word will highlight all keyboard shortcuts in the ribbon. Then you can press H and 4 keys either together or separately (by holding the alt key) to apply strikethrough for the selected content.
Strikethrough Shortcut in Excel
Control + 5 is the strikethrough keyboard shortcut in Microsoft Excel. The default, alt + H + 4 shortcut will not work in Excel. Highlight the cells and press control + 5 keys to apply strikethrough for the selected content.
Strikethrough Shortcut in PowerPoint
Alt + H + 4 is the Strikethrough shortcut for PowerPoint. It works similar to Microsoft Word. You can select single or multiple text boxes and press Alt + H + 4 to apply strikethrough for all selected content.
Apply Strikethrough Using Font Settings
Many people use font settings dialog in Microsoft Office to apply strikethrough. Though this needs few more clicks, it has many other options in addition to strikethrough.
- When you are in Word, Excel or PowerPoint, select the content first.
- Press “Control + D” shortcut keys to open Font dialog box.
- Again, press “Alt + K” to enable the checkbox for “Strikethrough”.
- Click “OK” button to apply strikethrough on the selected text.
The advantage here is that you can apply additional styles like double strikethrough, superscript, subscript, small caps, all caps and even hide selected text. You can also click on the “Set As Default” button to apply the selected options for the entire document or apply to the template. However, we do not see it is useful to apply strikethrough for entire document or template. Mostly, the above explained keyboard shortcuts will be useful in applying strikethrough when needed.
