Binary Vs Text Data

Now that you know about binary and text data, there are lot of differences between them:

  • You can easily read text data using any text editor apps like Notepad or TextEdit. Though you can open binary file in text editors, you can't understand the real meaning of the data.
  • Binary data is encrypted and stored as 0s and 1s in a way difficult for human to understand.
  • It is easy to send text data over email or messaging apps. But sending binary file or data may get corrupted when transfer.
  • Text characters are stored in UTF-8 (or as ASCII) format and have a line break to indicate a new line. Binary data does not have a line break.

For example, paste the below code in the box as two lines and convert to text.

01010111 01101000 01101111 00100000 01000001 01101101 00100000 01001001 00111111
01010111 01101000 01101111 00100000 01000001 01101101 00100000 01001001 00111111

You will see the result as a single line as below without any line break.
