If you have noticed, the latest Microsoft Edge browser has an option called “Rewrite with Copilot”. This option will automatically appear whenever you select a text in editor like online interfaces. This will help to rewrite the selected part of the text using Copilot AI. Though this is useful to refine your sentences, it will be also annoying as it interferes with your selection and right-click menu. Here is how you can effectively use Rewrite with Copilot option or completely disable it in Microsoft Edge.
Using Rewrite with Copilot in Edge
Make sure you are in any web-based text editor interface and select a text portion. You will see “Rewrite with Copilot” option appear and click on it.
Copilot will take few moments and show you the AI generated copy of rewritten content. If you are happy with the AI generated text, simply click on the “Replace” button to replace your original text with the AI written content. Otherwise, click on the “Try Again” refresh button to create another draft copy.
Customizing Copilot Response
Edge browser also comes with a Copilot icon on top of the sidebar section. If you click on it, you can see lot of customizing options for changing the tone, format and length of the content under “Compose” section.
Similar to Edge Copilot, you can also customize the “Rewrite with Copilot” option in Edge by clicking on the “Adjust” button. This will show Tone, Format and Length buttons and click on them to customize the rewriting options.
Here are the options available for you:
- Tone – Professional, Casual, Enthusiastic, Information or Funny.
- Format – Paragraph, Email, Ideas or Blog Post
- Length – Short, Medium or Long
Note that you can cancel the rewriting process in-between by scrolling down in the pop-up and clicking on “Stop generating” button.
Keyboard Shortcut for Rewrite with Copilot
If you are selecting text with Control + A or Command + A then, you can directly trigger the Copilot rewriting function with the following keyboard shortcuts:
- Windows Edge – Control + \
- Mac Edge – Command + \
Note that selecting text with Control or Command + Left or Right Arrow keys will also show the “Rewrite with Copilot” button. So, you do not need shortcut for those cases. It will be only useful when select all text in a block using Control or Command + A keys.
Disable Rewrite with Copilot in Edge
Though you can select a custom text with Rewrite with Copilot option, it is a replication of existing Edge Copilot feature. Also, this will interfere with right-click menu as you need to click two times to reveal the default context menu. Follow the below steps if you want to disable Rewrite with Copilot option and work without any distractions in Edge.
- Click the three dots icon called “Settings and more” showing on top right corner of the Edge app and select “Settings” menu.
- Go to “Languages” section in the left sidebar and scroll down to “Writing assistance” section on the right pane.
- Find “Use Compose (AI-writing) on the web” option and turn it off.
Now, you can select the text in any web-based text interface and you will not find “Rewrite with Copilot” option appears.
