Safari is the default browser app supplied with iOS. By default, tapping on any links from Mail and other apps will open the webpages in Safari. Similarly, Google Chrome is the default browser on most Android phones. Though these default browsers works fine, there are multiple reasons you may want to use different browsers. For example, you may want to use Microsoft Edge to sync your browsing history across your Windows PC. Or, you may want to use Mozilla Firefox for privacy reasons. Here is how you can change the default browser in iPhone and Android.
Changing Default Browser in iPhone
Apple did not provide any option for changing the default browser until iOS 13. This was annoying problem that you need to copy the link and paste in Chrome or another browser app to open the webpage in that browser. Fortunately, the option was introduced with iOS 14 and here we will explain how to setup Chrome as your default browser in iPhone with iOS 14 or later. If you are not happy with Safari, it is also possible to completely remove the app from your iPhone.
Why to Use Google Chrome in iPhone?
Many of us use Google products like Gmail, Chrome and Google Docs. You can login with single account and sync passwords, history and saved payment methods. Due to this heavy integration, using Chrome can help to simply your workflow and complete the tasks quickly. Let us take an example that you receive a newsletter in an email. Currently, clicking on any link in newsletter will open the page in Safari app. However, from iOS 14, you can change that to open the links default with Chrome.
After opening the page in Chrome, you can login or pay bills using stored password/payment methods available in your Google account across all your devices.
Change Chrome as Default Browser in iPhone
First, go to App Store and install Google Chrome app on your iPhone. Tap on “Settings” app and scroll down to find “Chrome” app.
Alternatively, you can swipe the settings screen down to search and find Chrome’s settings page.
The “Default Browser App” option will show “Safari”.
Tap on that option and choose “Chrome” from the available browsers on your iPhone.
Whenever you tap on a link from Mail or other app, iPhone will prompt you to confirm opening the page in Chrome instead of Safari.
Similar way, you can change the default browser to any other app like Firefox or Edge.
At any point of time, you can change back the default browser to Safari as explained above. Remember, you can change the default browser from any other browser app’s settings. Safari app settings do not show the option to change the default browser at first. However, once you change the default browser, Safari’s settings page will show the option to switch the browser.
