Paint is one of the oldest and simplest image creation tools for Windows users. Microsoft replaced Paint with Paint 3D in Windows 10, though both apps are still available for use. Creating PNG images are popular among web publishers due to the simple fact that it can support transparent background. PNG image format has larger size compared to JPG; however, you cannot create transparent background with JPG format. In this article, we will explain how to create image transparent background in Paint 3D.
Why Transparent Images are Popular?
Let us take an example of this website. We have a white background for this site. It will not be a big visibility problem when we publish images with white background. As a reader, you cannot find whether an image has white background or not as it blends with the site’s background. For example, below are the two similar images – first one is with transparent background and second is with white background.
However, the problem comes when you have different background color for the website. Images will show as projected when you publish with different backgrounds for images and website. In order to overcome this problem, you can use transparent background images.
How to Create Image with Transparent Background in Paint 3D?
Paint 3D allows you to create both 2D and 3D drawings. Depending upon your project, you can use 2D and 3D object in your drawing. However, when you should it as a 2D image when saving the project to create transparency.
Creating Transparency with 2D
Use Windows Search to find Paint 3D and open the app.
By default, Paint 3D will use a white color background for the canvas.
Use 2D shapes, brushes, stickers and text to complete your drawing (do not use 3D; we will explain 3D in next section).
After finishing your 2D drawing, click on the “Canvas” menu and enable “Transparent canvas” option.
Now, you will see the white background is disabled and the objects appears on the transparent background. Go to “Menu” and click on “Save” option. Ensure to select “2D – PNG” format and save your image. That is all; you have saved your image with transparent background.
Viewing Transparent Images
Below is the transparent image that we have created using Paint 3D. Remember, it does not have white background – it has no background color and adopt to the background of the platform.
However, you will see the black background when previewing the transparent background images in File Explorer or viewing in Photos app. Do not get confused with the black background that is not the image background.
Whenever you edit the images with Photos or any other app, make sure to save it in the same PNG format to retain the transparency.
Create Transparency with 3D Objects
Paint 3D as the name indicates allows you to insert 3D objects on your drawing. Though it is meant for creating 3D projects, you can still insert 3D objects in your 2D drawings and save as image with transparent background.
- Create your drawing like 2D drawing and insert 3D objects as well.
- After completing your drawing, go to “Menu”, choose “Save as” and “Image” option.
- Paint 3D will show you options for saving your project as an image.
- Select “PNG (image)” as type and check “Transparency” box.
- Now, Paint 3D will remove the background canvas and apply transparent background.
- Click on “Save” button to open “Save as” dialog box.
- Provide name for your image and select “2D – PNG” as your format.
- Save your image with transparent background.

Saving in GIF Format
Note that PNG is a replacement for GIF image format. Hence, you can also choose to save your transparent background images with 2D or 3D objects in GIF format instead of PNG. However, the image quality (lower) and size (higher) may be different with GIF images that you may not prefer.
