Everyday millions of people read or search on the internet on how to make money from their online content using Google AdSense. Besides this, there is equivalent number of people searching for how much money will I earn from AdSense? Maybe you have a site already running AdSense ads or you are building a new site and looking for monetizing opportunities. Whatsoever the case, here we provide some factual data and check the factors needed to earn the desired income from AdSense.
Fake Online Data
First and foremost thing to understand after getting AdSense approval is to be honest and set correct expectation. Check out the Google image search result for the keyword “AdSense check” showing as many as checks to attract users.

Keep the below points as a general rule of thumb:
- Most of those sites and pictures shown are fake. Trying with those fake companies for improving AdSense revenue will instantly result in banning your account.
- Believe that the world’s most used search engine company has enough mechanisms in place to find click frauds to protect advertiser’s money.
- Honesty is the best policy and follow it when trying to make online money.
- Though there are no rules, generally AdSense publishers do not publish their earnings, especially copy of their payment checks.
Factors Affecting AdSense Earnings
How much you can make from Google AdSense depends on two simple factors – traffic and topic of your site (niche).
Traffic Vs Earnings
Think of how many times did you click online ads on the sites you browse through internet? Most probably you never did it or never remember. Google has a measurement called “Click Through Rate” or CTR to show you how much percentage of people really clicks on the ads on your site.
CTR = (Number of clicks / Number of impressions) *100
In general, CTR of a site will be around 0.01 (1%) which means 1 out of every 100 user clicks on an ad which could vary broadly based on the topics of your site.
Topic of Your Site – Niche and Keywords
The “Cost Per Click” or CPC shows the amount paid by Google for one click. The range varies from few cents to few dollars. As an average we can keep this CPC as $0.5 and most of the cases it will be even lower than this.
For example, a site with online trading will obviously have lot of financial ads with high CPC whereas a site for cooking recipes may have ads with less CPC.
How Much I Can Really Make?
Don’t get distracted with the hefty check images of AdSense and fake stories of people earning over one thousand dollars per month from AdSense. In reality, AdSense or any other PPC program for that matter is like a tree where you need to plant a seed and water it for many years before tasting the fruits. Understand the reality of how much traffic you are getting and the average CPC on your site. Use the below tool to find out how much total revenue you can make per day:
Is it Possible to Make $1000 per month from AdSense?
Let us discuss this with example:
- Your expected total revenue or monthly income = $1000
- Approximate daily income = 1000 / 30 = $35
- Average CPC = $0.5
- Average CTR = 0.01 (1%)
In order to earn $1000 per month you need to have a site with approximately 7000 page impressions per day (to make $35 per day). Does it look unrealistic? We don’t think. There are plenty of sites actually have more than this amount of traffic, CPC and CTR which essentially means they definitely make a handsome income. If you have a site with 1 million page views per month then you can earn approximately $5000 per month. Moreover, you can place ads on multiple sites adhering to AdSense policies under the same account (though each site needs approval from Google).
But for an individual publisher having a single site with limited traffic, this is an unrealistic amount at the start. Over few years of time with traffic improving due to increased articles on your site, AdSense earnings will also start improving to a considerable level. For an individual publisher it may take more than 5 years to build a site getting 1 million ad impressions per month. So, it does not matter the penny you get today, it does matter following AdSense guidelines, having online presence for years and publish content consistently to reach your targeted earnings.
Update on Moving to CPM
During 2024 (around February), Google completely moved AdSense earnings from CPC to CPM model making clicks and click through rate are of no meaning. All what matters now is the number of ad impressions, and you will be paid for 1000 impressions on your site. So, if your site generates 1 million ad impressions with the CPM rate of $5, you can make $5000.
- Amount for 1000 ad impressions (CPM) = $5.
- Total number of ad impressions = 1 million.
- Revenue generated = (1 million * 5) / 1000 = $5000.
Checking Estimated AdSense Revenue from Google
At this point, Google also offers an estimated revenue calculator tool. Go to AdSense homepage and scrol down a bit to find the tool.

Fill your region, niche and monthly page views to find the estimated revenue. For example, we get $13,446 annual revenue when we fill 100K monthly page views for a reference category in North America.

This tool may confuse you with insufficient details. First, the page views is for month but revenue is annual. Second, ad impressions can be completely different than the page views. If you assume 8 ads per page, then 100K page views will be converted to 800K ad impressions. With $1.25 CPM rate, you will get $1000 which is nearer to the amount estimated by the tool (13446/12 = 1120.5).
Summary
CPM rates vary across countries and niche which will drastically change the total revenue generated from your AdSense account. If you plan to start from the scratch with AdSense, make sure to pick a competitive niche (example – finance) and target for high traffic from US. Hobby bloggers (like in recipe or travel niche) with traffic from Asia Pacific countries can’t make much from AdSense alone. You may need to look for additional options like selling eBooks or promoting affiliate products to improve the revenue.

Very nice article, providing the overview of how much we can earn from AdSense. I have a start up site not earning much.
