Smartphones are excellent for making calls, listening to music, playing games, or watching videos. Sometimes it happens that you observe a decline in the sound quality of your phone. There may be a total absence of sound as well. Your Android phone has two speakers. One is a receiver that is situated in the earpiece. The primary purpose of the receiver is to listen to the calls you receive. The receiver’s maximum volume in the earpiece is low, and it is only intended to listen when close to the ear. The second speaker is primarily used to listen to music, ringtones, and calls with the hands-free operation. If you are experiencing sound-related problems in your Android phone, follow the below steps to resolve the issues.
Basic Checks for Android Sound Problems Related to Calls
If you observe a decline in sound quality on a call or can’t listen at all, check for the following.
- Poor reception produces a faint sound of the person talking to you on the phone. Check if this problem only happens in a particular area like your office.
- Check the signal strength on your phone. Try to move to another place like close to the window or outside. If you are on call through the internet like WhatsApp or Telegram make sure internet connectivity is in good condition. Also, shift between receiver speaker and main speaker to observe if there is some improvement.
- Change the volume by pressing the volume up or down buttons during the call. Keep the volume down button pressed for a few seconds, and then press the volume up button for a few seconds. It will reset the sound settings, and you may see an improvement in the sound.
- Toggle loudspeaker by pressing the speaker button on the screen multiple times.
- Try calling through different calling apps like WhatsApp or Telegram and see if you can still use the speakers.
- Plugin your earphones and see if you can listen to the person on the call. Make sure earphones are appropriately plugged in. Similarly, check if your phone is connected to any external audio device.
- You may try Bluetooth earphones as well. Remember, if you have paired your Bluetooth earphones before, your phone will automatically connect to your earphones if they are on. Hence, the sound may be going to your Bluetooth earphones placed in the drawer or somewhere away from you. Thus, turning off the Bluetooth is also worth trying.
- The Do Not Disturb function is another feature in which Android mutes certain notifications. If it is on, it may mute your Android phone speakers and disabling it can solve the sound problems of your Android phone. Swipe down your finger from the top of the mobile phone screen. Check if the “Do Not Disturb” function is turned on tap it to turn it off.
- If you cannot listen to any sound on a call, see if the calling person has muted their microphone by accident. If that is the case, tell them to unmute the microphone.
- Check if the other person can hear you? Tell the other person to check for the above points.
Resolving All Types of Sound Problems
The above things will help you figure out the cause of the problem, which you can eliminate. If no problem is found, then move to the next steps.
Check for Physical Damage and Clean the Speakers
If the problem persists with the receiver speaker or main speaker, examine both speakers for any physical damage or water spill. You can clean them up gently if the sound is not clear. If required, check your phone manual before doing this process, and ensure you know how to do this perfectly.
Restart Your Phone
If no sign of damage to the speakers is visible, restarting the phone might help solve this issue.
Check Sound Settings
Press the volume up or down button once, and a volume level bar will appear on the screen edge. Press the three dots at the bottom of the volume level bar. A quick “Sound & vibration” setting will appear on your Android phone screen.
The first one is the “Media volume” button. The second is “Call volume,” which is to set the volume of the call after receiving it. Similarly, the next is “Ring & notification volume,” and the last is “Alarm volume.” There is a level bar to increase or decrease the sound level. Move the slider to your desired level and see if you can see the improvement in the sound.
You can press the “Settings” button to open detailed sound settings. Make sure to disable “Do Not Disturb” function and check you have proper ringtone which you can hear when someone call you. You can check a lot of other settings related to sounds like “Shortcut to prevent ringing,” “Dial pad tones,” “Touch sounds,” etc. Manipulate the settings related to your sound problems and check if it helps.
Third Party App Sound Settings
If you use a 3rd party app like a music player, check their sound settings like equalizers, etc.
Restart Phone in Safe Mode
The safe mode of the Android phone is a mode in which the phone will start with only necessary Android modules, and no other app will load into the operating system. If an app is making sound problems, you can easily confirm this by starting your phone in safe mode. Check with your Android phone manufacturer on how to restart your phone in safe mode. The usual process is as follows.
- Press and hold the power button. A pop-up palette will appear on the screen with various buttons like “Emergency,” “Lockdown,” “Power off,” “Restart,” and “Screenshot.”
- Press and hold down the “Power off” button on the screen. A message will appear on the screen to reboot to safe mode.
- Press “OK” to restart your phone in safe mode.
- To exit the safe mode and start the phone in normal mode, restart the phone.
If your sound problem is resolved in safe mode, an app probably makes trouble. Find the app and uninstall it.
Factory Reset
Safe mode is better than factory reset because you don’t lose any data. After a factory reset, you will lose all your data stored on the phone’s memory and apps. If safe mode doesn’t solve your sound problem, then a factory reset might help you because your phone will start as the first time after a factory reset. Check with your phone manual on how to factory reset it. After a factory reset, see if the sound problem is solved.
Technical Support
If none of this works, your sound problem might be complicated. The best option to get technical support from the phone manufacturer.
