We all access news, social and our favorite sites to get information. It is not necessary to enter the URL every time when you want to open the same news or social site. Bookmarks are an easy way to store the URL of favorite webpages on your browser so that you can access it when you need. It makes your online experience easier and more manageable. It’s easy to open your favorite webpages, regardless of how complex the URL structure is.
Many people think that they manage just fine without using bookmarks, but they are missing out on methods that can make them more productive especially on browsers like Google Chrome. In this article let us explain how to add and delete bookmarks in Chrome with some tips to quickly access them.
1. Add Bookmarks in Chrome
Chrome allows you to bookmark a webpage in multiple ways.
1.1. Use Star Icon in Address Bar
Open your favorite webpage and click on the star icon located at the right end of the Chrome’s address bar. A dialog box will appear for you to enter the name for the bookmark and choose the folder to store the URL. Bookmarks bar is the default folder to store the bookmark and Chrome will remember the last used folder.
If you want to organize the bookmarks folder wise, then select the folder using the drop down menu. Click on the “New Folder” to create a new folder for storing your bookmark.
We recommend you to edit the name of the bookmarks so that it is easier to remember. Finally click on “Save” or “Done” button to complete adding bookmark in Chrome.
1.2. Use Bookmarks Bar
Open Google Chrome and press “Ctrl+ Shift + B” in Windows or “Command + shift + B” in Mac to open the bookmarks bar. Right click on the bookmarks bar and choose “Add Page…” from the context menu.
You will see similar dialog box like in option 1. Edit the bookmark name, choose the folder and click on the “Save” button to create a bookmark.

1.3. Drag and Drop
Go to your favorite webpage on the Chrome browser. Select the site address, drag and drop to the bookmarks bar. If you want to save the bookmark in a folder, drag the URL and hover over a folder. Wait for the folder to expand and drop the URL inside.
Remember you can drag and drop any URL on a page to the bookmarks bar. It need not be necessary only from the address bar.
After bookmarking a webpage, you can access the page from the bookmarks bar or from the bookmarked folder. Alternatively, you can also go to “Settings > Bookmarks” to view bookmarked pages or go to the “Bookmarks Manager”.
2. Delete Bookmarks in Chrome
If you use bookmarks often, it is easy to accumulate hundreds of them. However, eventually you may have no wish to re-visit many of these pages again. Use any of these methods to remove bookmarks from Chrome.
2.1. Click the Blue Star
When you have bookmarked a page with Google Chrome, you will find that the star next to the URL has turned to blue. Open the bookmarked page that you want to remove from your bookmarks list. Click on the blue star and a dialog box will appear. Click on the Remove button.
2.2. Use Bookmark Manager
Open Google Chrome and press “Ctrl + Shift + B” or “Command + Shift + B” shortcut keys to open bookmark manager. Alternatively, you can open it through “Settings > Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager”.
Select the bookmark that you want to delete and press the delete button on your keyboard. Otherwise right click on the bookmark and choose “Delete” option.

Most of the times simply adding or deleting bookmarks on the bar is not sufficient. You need to organize, search and sort quickly. 4. Syncing Bookmarks Between Computers
With this method, you can easily and quickly use an identical list of bookmarks on different computers. Since Chrome version 4.0, you can use the Bookmarks Sync feature to move your bookmarks quickly to other devices. When you add or remove a bookmark, the change will be applied automatically to other devices as well. Remember you should sign into your Google account in order to sync the bookmarks on all devices.
You can log in to Chrome by going to “chrome://settings” and click on the “Sign in to Chrome” button.
5. Organizing Bookmarks for Quick Access
There’s no use of using bookmarks, if it takes time to access your bookmarks. Follow these steps to quickly access your bookmarks:
- Click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner
- Hover mouse pointer on Bookmark option and enable “Show bookmarks bar”
Your bookmarks bar should appear under the address bar for quick access. However, due to the limitation of space, only a few of bookmarks are displayed with arrow button to expand the list.
It is a good habit to categorize bookmarks into folder for quicker access. Right click anywhere on the bookmarks bar and choose “Add Folder” option. Enter the name for new folder and click on “Add” button. You will see the folder is added in the last position of the bookmarks section. You can drag to the top position and directly drop on the bookmarks bar. Now add or move preferred bookmark URLs into the new folder. You can create many folders on the bar and add quick accessible bookmarks.
6. Remove Bookmarks Bar
You can toggle the bookmarks bar by pressing “Control + Shift + B” or “Command + Shift + B”. But this will only work when you have opened any webpage. On a new tab page, Chrome enables bookmarks bar by default and you can’t remove it from the display.
